EP204: Dan's Journey Part 4

A proactive approach to health—including regular blood tests, cholesterol monitoring, cardiac scanning, and seeing specialists—can be lifesaving and may prevent major cardiac events like heart attacks. Recovery from bypass surgery is gradual and non-linear; complications like infections or medication side effects can extend recovery time, but persistence and patience yield consistent improvement. Return to normal activities like jogging and surfing can occur around the 12-13 week post-surgery mark, though activities should start gently and progress cautiously based on individual tolerance. Some nerve damage from surgery is unavoidable and may persist long-term, but this doesn't prevent return to full physical function and activity levels. Read more

Dan's liver function tests (ALT levels) showed abnormalities reaching 1,000 (normal is under 50), likely triggered by post-surgical medications and antibiotics, requiring extended hospitalization (9-10 days) and daily blood tests at home. Under doctor's supervision, Dan's cholesterol medications and other medicines were temporarily stopped to allow his liver to recover, then carefully reintroduced once ALT levels normalized. A leg infection from antibiotics prevented Dan from walking for three weeks and stalled his rehabilitation progress during the first four weeks post-surgery. Psychologically, Dan's mental state improved once surgery occurred because the uncertainty and fear of the unknown were replaced with concrete physical injuries he could work toward recovering from. The transition from pre-operative anxiety and life-threatening uncertainty to post-operative recovery focused on tangible physical healing provided Dan with a sense of control and purpose in his recovery journey. Treatment options depend on severity: valve-only replacement, aorta-only repair, or combined valve and aorta surgery; valve replacement can be performed via open heart surgery or transcutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Family screening is strongly recommended because bicuspid aortic valve is genetic, and early detection with proper management allows patients to maintain near-normal life expectancy without significantly compromised health outcomes. A single licorice tea bag can contain up to 100 milligrams of glycyrrhizin, meaning consuming more than one per day risks causing pseudo-hyperaldosteronism. Excess licorice leads to sodium retention, potassium loss, fluid retention, and elevated blood pressure, posing particular risks for those already suffering from hypertension. Other herbal supplements present cardiovascular risks: garlic, ginkgo, and echinacea can thin blood and increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants; St. John's Wort reduces absorption of beta blockers and statins. Green tea, alfalfa, ginseng, and ginger can interfere with blood thinners like warfarin, while grapefruit can elevate statin levels to dangerous concentrations. Patients should consult their pharmacist before combining herbal supplements with prescription medications to avoid potentially serious drug interactions and adverse health effects. Read more
