The heart beats approximately 100,000 times a day, pumping blood throughout your body. Understanding how it works is the first step in taking control of your heart health. The primary function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues while simultaneously carrying waste products like carbon dioxide back to the lungs for removal; this process is achieved through the heart's four chambers and valves which regulate blood flow, all powered by the heart's intrinsic electrical system that maintains a steady rhythm of contractions and relaxations.

Hi, and welcome to day one! I'm really keen to talk about this amazing organ that lives in our chest and that most of us take for granted. You probably didn't know, but your heart starts to pulsate and beat at just 22 days post-gestation. At that stage, we're not even the shape of a living organism yet. It's quite remarkable! Over an entire lifetime, we get nearly two and a half to three billion beats from our heart. It pumps about 7,500 liters of blood every day—that's enough to fill 20 backyard swimming pools every year.

The structure of the heart consists of four chambers: two top chambers and two bottom chambers. The top chambers are called the atria, while the bottom chambers are called the ventricles. Each atrium and ventricle together form either the left or right side of the heart. The left side of the heart pumps blood out to the body, which we feel as the pulse at our wrist. Meanwhile, the right side of the heart pumps blood into the lungs. Valves positioned throughout the heart act as one-way gates, ensuring that blood moves in the correct direction as the heart squeezes.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the heart is that it pumps the blood that also supplies itself. The arteries carrying blood away from the heart eventually return oxygenated blood to nourish the heart muscle. This incredible pump accelerates, decelerates, and responds to our needs in seconds.

Another amazing feature of the heart is that it is made up of cells with a unique characteristic called automaticity. This means that if you were to take a single heart cell out of the body, it would continue to pulsate rhythmically on its own. It’s almost eerie to think about, but truly remarkable! When all the cells of the heart function together, they act as a single unit. The term for this is **syncytium**.
