I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Episode 37: Chest Pain - When Is It Your Heart? This episode features a host and medical guest discussing the common causes of chest pain and how to determine when it requires immediate medical attention. The episode aims to educate listeners about distinguishing between serious cardiac events and benign causes of chest discomfort, emphasizing the importance of recognizing warning signs and seeking professional help when needed. Key Takeaways: Not all chest pain is related to the heart, but it's important to understand the different potential causes. Gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux and heartburn are common non-cardiac causes of chest pain that typically feel like a burning sensation. Muscle strain from heavy lifting or exercise can cause chest wall pain that may be mistaken for cardiac problems. Seek immediate medical attention if chest pain is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or pain radiating to the arm or jaw. Anxiety can cause chest pain that manifests as tightness or pressure, which requires consideration of both physical and mental health factors. When in doubt about the cause of chest pain, it's better to err on the side of caution and get checked out by a medical professional rather than self-diagnose. Listening to your body and recognizing warning signs is crucial for determining whether chest pain requires urgent care. Read more

EP30: How Rapid Heartbeat (Arrythmia) Can Damage The Heart

Today, I'd like to speak with you a little bit about a concept that we call tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. That's a mouthful, so let me break it down for you. "Tachy" means fast. "Tachycardia", "cardia" relates to heart, so fast heart. Induced means the same whether it's referring to the medical term or common vernacular. "Cardia", referring to the heart, and myopathy referring to a problem with the muscle. So, fast heart-induced muscle problem, or Tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. Read more

EP29: Do I Need A Pacemaker For Atrial Fibrillation?

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Episode Summary Dr. Warwick Bishop, a practicing cardiologist and author, hosts this educational podcast aimed at helping patients understand their heart health. In this episode, Dr. Bishop addresses a frequently asked question from his atrial fibrillation patients: whether they need a pacemaker. The episode explains the fundamental difference between atrial fibrillation and the conditions that actually require pacemakers. Key Takeaways: Pacemakers are designed to treat slow heart rates by providing electrical stimulation, not to address rapid heartbeats. The general answer to whether atrial fibrillation patients need a pacemaker is no, since AF causes the heart to beat too fast, not too slow. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the atria beat rapidly and chaotically, flooding the AV node (the electrical gateway between the upper and lower heart chambers) with impulses. These excessive electrical impulses from the chaotic atria drive the ventricles into rapid, irregular contractions, characteristic of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation requires heart rate regulation rather than pacemaker therapy. In rare cases, when medications fail to adequately control atrial fibrillation or aren't well tolerated, doctors may perform AV node ablation to completely disconnect the atria from the ventricles. When AV node ablation is performed for atrial fibrillation, a pacemaker must be implanted simultaneously because this procedure would otherwise leave the heart beating dangerously slowly. Dr. Bishop emphasizes that patient education leads to better healthcare outcomes. Read more
