EP298: Blue Light Glasses and Smells to Remember

Inhaling pleasant essential oil aromas during sleep showed a remarkable 226% improvement in memory in cognitively normal older adults over six months compared to a control group. The olfactory (smell) nerve provides a direct "superhighway" connection into the brain's memory centers, making smell the only sense with direct access to these critical cognitive areas. A study using rose, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, and lavender scents delivered nightly via diffuser showed improved brain functioning in the left uncinate fasciculus, a memory-linked brain region that typically declines with age. While the aroma research is promising and preliminary, more studies are needed to confirm and understand the mechanisms behind the cognitive benefits of olfactory enrichment. Read more

Testosterone therapy did show small but statistically significant increases in atrial fibrillation (5.2% vs 3.3%), acute kidney injury (3.5% vs 2.4%), and pulmonary embolism risk. Unexpectedly, testosterone treatment was associated with increased fracture risk, which may be explained by improved quality of life and increased activity levels rather than a direct harmful effect. Testosterone replacement improved sexual function and sense of well-being in treated men, providing benefits that may outweigh the small identified risks for appropriate candidates. Read more

Aspartame exposure showed multi-generational effects in research, with anxiety-like behaviors and amygdala gene changes appearing in offspring up to two generations removed from exposed individuals, suggesting potential impacts beyond the direct consumer. The anxiety symptoms induced by aspartame in test subjects responded to diazepam (an anti-anxiety medication), confirming the neurobiological nature of the sweetener's effects. Human populations at risk from aspartame's mental health effects may be significantly larger than currently recognized, potentially including multiple generations beyond direct consumers. Read more

If uncertain whether chest pain is indigestion or cardiac-related, always seek medical evaluation; however, people who have experienced cardiac events often recognize the distinctive quality of cardiac pain in future episodes. Statins are highly effective for managing high cholesterol in high-risk patients, with nearly three decades of robust clinical data supporting their use, and several promising alternative therapies are in development. Personal wearable devices and smartphones increasingly measure HRV, but standardized baselines and consistent measurement protocols are needed to meaningfully compare data across different devices and time periods. Future applications of HRV monitoring could include early detection of developing infections, like identifying the onset of a cold before symptoms appear. Read more

Left main coronary artery disease requires treatment regardless of plaque quality, as it represents the weakest link in coronary circulation and carries significant risk. Cholesterol-lowering therapy (statins) stabilizes fatty plaque and converts it to calcified plaque, making it difficult to assess plaque progression on repeat calcium scoring but more visible on contrast-enhanced CT angiograms. Blood tests measuring brain natriuretic peptides (BNP) and atrial natriuretic peptides help determine if shortness of breath is heart-related or lung-related. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) provides exquisite, highly sensitive diagnostic information, though it is time-consuming with limited Medicare rebates in Australia. Vasovagal episodes (simple faints triggered by the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system) are the most common cause of blackouts and are typically preventable and less concerning for driving privileges. Distinguishing between different causes of blackouts is critical because heart and brain-related syncope may require temporary suspension of driver's licenses until proper diagnosis is confirmed. The parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" response) can lower heart rate and blood pressure so significantly that profound vagal responses trigger loss of consciousness. Read more

Preventative medications include aspirin, blood pressure and cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood thinners, and four cornerstone therapies for cardiac failure, while symptomatic medications address angina, fluid buildup, and irregular heart rhythms. Stents and bypass grafting are established interventional techniques for treating arterial blockages, with stents being minimally invasive and widely available with continuously improving technology. Percutaneous valve implantation—inserting valves through small leg incisions rather than open-heart surgery—represents an exciting frontier, with aortic valves currently most commonly targeted and mitral and tricuspid valves soon to follow. Electrophysiological ablation uses specialized catheters to break problematic heart rhythm circuits through cold, heat, or radio frequency therapy, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional defibrillation. Emerging technologies such as stem cell therapy for damaged hearts and mRNA-based cardiovascular therapies are expected to become prominent within the next five to ten years. Read more
