Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop, and I'm a cardiologist. I'd like to talk about atrial fibrillation and whether you need a pacemaker. I get asked this fairly commonly. Atrial fibrillation is a common rhythm within an irregular chaotic top beating part of the heart, bombarding the lower part of the heart with electrical activity. Well, in general terms, the heart in atrial fibrillation is racing. In fact, we need to slow it down. And when we think about a pacemaker, we generally use a pacemaker when there is a disconnect between the electrical activity of the top part of the heart and the bottom part of the heart. So a pacemaker is to speed the heart up when it's going too slow. Atrial fibrillation generally is going too fast. So we use drugs to slow atrial fibrillation down. We don't need a pacemaker for atrial fibrillation. So I hope that helps. Take care.

If you're interested, I've done a podcast on the very topic. Link should be below. Please enjoy it. I wish you the very best, try not to get atrial fibrillation. Take care. Don't die from a heart attack and goodbye.
