EP273: Aging and Red Wine

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

Doctor Warrick Bishop discusses two papers related to aging and red wine in this podcast. The first paper, published in 2013, identified molecular indicators important in assessing aging in mammals.

Since then, approximately 300,000 articles have been published on the topic. The Mediterranean diet is recommended for slowing down aging, and eating nuts, fibre-rich foods, and a diet low in fatty meats and sugars is associated with less chronic disease.

The second paper discusses a study on the effects of red wine on gut microbiota in men with coronary artery disease. The study found that red wine consumption possibly improved antioxidant levels in the blood, but there is no clear evidence that alcohol consumption is beneficial in this space.

Doctor Bishop emphasizes the importance of living as well as possible for as long as possible and encourages listeners to visit the Healthy Heart Network's website to evaluate their risk of coronary artery disease.

  • Heart disease is a significant problem in Australia, with someone suffering a heart attack every 20 minutes.
  • A Mediterranean diet, rich in fibre and antioxidants, is associated with better health and may help slow down aging.
  • There are various molecular indicators of aging, including genomic instability, telomere wear, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
  • Dysregulation of nutrient sensing, chronic inflammation, and imbalances in the microbiome is also associated with aging.
  • Red wine consumption may improve antioxidant levels in the blood, but there is no clear evidence that alcohol consumption is beneficial for health.
  • There is no healthy amount of alcohol, and excess alcohol consumption is harmful.
  • The gut microbiota can be analyzed using RNA sequencing techniques to determine the number and species of bugs within the gut.
  • Synthetic prebiotics, fermented foods, and polyphenols can interfere with gut microbiota analysis.
  • There is no clear-cut diet tie to longevity, but reducing chronic conditions and improving their management can impact age and health.
  • Coronary artery disease kills one in four people, and evaluating the risk is important for maintaining heart health.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all of this is…

Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.

This podcast is for anyone who wants to improve their health literacy and gain information to help them make the best decisions about their risk of heart attack, their cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes, weight loss and general health. Join me on my personal mission journey to prevent Heart Attack on a global scale.
