Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

In this podcast, Doctor Warrick Bishop discusses Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH).

NAFLD is defined as fat accumulation within the liver that is not driven by alcohol consumption, and it is closely linked with obesity and morbid obesity. NASH is the inflammation of the liver caused by fat accumulation, and it can progress to cirrhosis, which is fatal without transplantation. Fructose is the primary sugar within fruit, and it can also be linked to the development of fatty liver.

Doctor Bishop recommends keeping weight down, keeping fructose and carbohydrates down, and seeking help if weight is building up. He also suggests exploring bariatric surgery for weight reduction and using ezetimibe, a drug that modifies the development of NAFLD. Statins are not detrimental to the progression of NAFLD, and they may be slightly protective. Doctor Bishop emphasizes the importance of keeping a close eye on weight and seeking appropriate remedies.

  • NAFLD stands for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, which is a condition where fat accumulates in the liver without being driven by alcohol consumption.
  • NASH stands for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis, which is a condition where there is inflammation in the liver due to fat accumulation.
  • NAFLD and NASH can both progress to cirrhosis, which is when the liver scars up and fails.
  • Morbid obesity is the single biggest driver of NAFLD, and type 2 diabetes with increased weight is also a driver.
  • Insulin resistance is central to NAFLD, and fructose is also linked to the development of fatty liver.
  • Fruit, which contains fructose, may be problematic for individuals carrying excess weight and at risk of developing fatty liver.
  • Keeping weight down, keeping fructose and carbohydrates down, and using drugs like ezetimibe can help prevent or reverse NAFLD.
  • NAFLD is a complication of obesity that people are not aware of, but it can be fatal and is almost impossible to treat without transplantation.
  • Liver enzymes and blood tests can give a clue that there's some derangement of the liver enzymes and the way they're working.
  • Seeking help from a GP or local specialist and putting in place appropriate remedies can help prevent or reverse NAFLD.
